In honour of National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), we asked our VRC team members some questions about disability inclusion and employment.

How have you seen a workplace transform when it welcomed employees with disabilities?
  • It changed how the employer and staff perceived a disability
  • They were able to see the strengths a person was able to contribute
  • Everyone benefited from a more supportive environment
  • All employees felt valued and empowered to contribute fully
  • It enhanced practices that streamlined tasks for the entire team
What is a step employers can take to make their hiring practices more inclusive?
  • Use accommodation statements and inclusive language
  • Simplify the hiring process by removing application barriers
  • Remove skills from job postings that are irrelevant to the work
  • Be honest about hiring practices – don’t just say, do
What is the biggest misconception you hear about hiring people with disabilities?
  • Misconception: They are not as productive and it will be expensive or complicated to hire them.
Reality: These employees are loyal, more productive, and add to the richness of workplace culture.
  • Misconception: High cost, reliability, and reduced capability to do the role.
Reality: Option for work trials, inclusive training, and open discussions about scheduling can ensure the employee is supported and successful.
  • Misconception: Other staff members may feel inequalities in their roles.
Reality: If employers hire all the same people with no diversity in their workforce, it limits the team.
  • Misconception: They won’t be able to perform the job effectively.
Reality: Employees with disabilities often demonstrate exceptional work ethic, integrity, and dedication, taking great pride in their work.

Small changes – to perceptions and practices – can make a big difference for the people around us.

Together, let’s be the change.
