After relocating from a city to rural Northern Ontario nearly two years ago, Patrick faced significant challenges securing employment due to limited local work history. Focused on establishing a homestead, he wasn’t sure how to translate his practical skills into professional opportunities.
To re-enter the workforce, Patrick enrolled in Employable YOU, an Agilec program designed to empower youth aged 15–30 with the skills, knowledge, and experience needed to successfully transition into the labour market. The program offers a wrap-around approach to career development, combining pre-employment workshops, accredited skills training, paid job placements, and one-on-one coaching to support long-term success.
Working closely with his Agilec Trainer, Patrick completed Employment Skills Training in early 2025. He developed job search strategies, improved his soft skills like communication and adaptability, and gained the confidence needed to overcome employment barriers.
With guidance from program staff, Patrick identified Canadore College’s Meat Processing Fundamentals course as a meaningful next step and began training in mid-2025 while also securing part-time work in the meat department of a local grocery store – all bringing Patrick hands-on experience in meat cutting, food safety, and industry standards.
Patrick is now earning a stable income for his family and building the skills needed for a sustainable career in his new community.
