Temporary, OPSEU Bargaining Unit

Compensation: $27.88 (starting) – $29.00 (after 3 months)

This position reports to the Public Works Foreperson or designate and is expected to start October 15, 2024 and end on April 15, 2025.

What You Will Do:

  • Perform Public Works operations for year-round road maintenance, construction and infrastructure repairs including but not limited to winter patrol, sanding, salting and snow plowing, traffic control; maintenance of parks’ facilities, docks and wharfs; repair of potholes, road and entrance culverts; hard top and loose top surface patching and maintenance; sign repairs and replacement; debris and beaver dam removal; and performing manual labour and minor mechanical maintenance, as necessary.
  • Perform tree removal, tree limbing, roadside brushing and roadside vegetation removal, as required.
  • Monitor road conditions and conduct the call out for roadway maintenance when required for snowplows, sanders and hired contractors.
  • Perform various operations related to parks, trails, municipal properties and facilities.
  • Maintain equipment by performing greasing, cleaning, minor repairs, and service to ensure the safety, efficiency and effectiveness of the vehicle and equipment operations, while maximizing their lifecycle. Advise the Fleet, Yard and Facilities Foreperson of any problems or defects as soon as possible.
  • Maintain responsibility for the equipment and materials assigned to you and ensure they are available at the time and location required. Ensure that all acceptable and responsible safety measures are taken to protect personnel, equipment, material, co-workers, yourself and the public from injury and damage.
  • Lead crew members in safe working operations as directed by the Public Works Foreperson or designate.

Qualifications:

We are looking for a team player who is enthusiastic, customer service focused and who has the following:

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience in winter sand/salt, snowplow, snow removal and road and roadside maintenance operations. Construction and infrastructure repairs experience is an asset.
  • Good working knowledge of the Ontario Minimum Maintenance Standards for Municipal Highways, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, MTO Traffic Control (Book 7), and WHMIS 2015.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to work effectively in a team environment and to exhibit courtesy, tact, and diplomacy in dealing with the public, department officials, and other members of staff. Ability to adhere to confidentiality requirements at all times.
  • Demonstrated experience operating propane torch kits.
  • Basic working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications. Experience using associated public works software programs is an asset.
  • Adequate written and verbal communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Availability to work on a 24-hour call-out basis, shifts including evening and weekends, stand-by and overtime.
  • Ability to provide an acceptable current criminal record check.
  • A valid Class “D” Ontario Driver’s License with a “Z” air brake endorsement in good standing with a current and acceptable Driver’s Abstract.
