Job searching has current trends just like fashion. It’s just not appropriate to walk out the door and use the same resume that you used 20 years ago to apply for jobs now and expect the same results. Even though high-waisted jeans and miniskirts seem to be back in style (for better or worse), resumes, and job searching, in general have evolved.

Show your online presence.
Include your LinkedIn URL on your application. If you are submitting by email or online, the employer will be able to click the link and see your profile right away! A LinkedIn profile will allow prospective employers the opportunity to learn more about your skills and qualifications. But be sure to have a great LinkedIn profile that is in-line with your resume!

Use keywords that MATCH job descriptions.
More and more employers use applicant tracking systems (ATS) to screen applications and generate a short list. To make sure you get past this step in recruiting, use the job description or the job advertisement to zero in on what keywords they will be searching for.

Creating and using multiple versions.
Just as no two jobs are the same, no two applications should be the same. Create applications for each job. You don’t have to start from scratch every time, but you do have to take the time to individualize and target each application. For some applications a skills based resume makes sense, for others, you will need a reverse chronological version of your information. A reverse chronological resume is the most preferred style for applicant tracking systems (ATS)

Follow the instructions on what format to submit.
Don’t forget to make sure that you are submitting your application in the format required by the employer! (Word, PDF and .txt are the most common formats requested)
