GreenUP is a registered environmental charity that offers programs and services to those living and working in the Peterborough region. Our programs focus on facilitating positive action and providing the tools to make changes that can create a large and lasting impact on our environment. As an active community organization, we partner with individuals, businesses, other non-profit organizations, and governments to ensure that our region maintains its longstanding track record of environmental leadership in Ontario and across Canada.

JOB DESCRIPTION
The Communications Manager leads external communications regarding GreenUP’s robust environmental education
and action programs in Nogojiwanong/Peterborough. Their role is to support GreenUP in achieving our mission and
vision by increasing community awareness of our programs and services and to enable our team to effectively
communicate with a variety of stakeholders. Our ideal Communications Manager has a collaborative working style,
strong interpersonal skills, and enthusiasm for environmental action and education.
The Communications Manager is responsible for producing a weekly news column, undertaking advertising buys,
writing and editing, managing websites and social media accounts, designing graphics, acting as an organization
spokesperson, maintaining close relationships with local media, and assisting with agreed upon fundraising tasks. The
Communications Manager may supervise one or more part-time communications staff and works directly with the
GreenUP team to produce educational and informative communications materials that support our work.
The Communications Manager is a champion for GreenUP who elevates our brand and increases GreenUP’s public
pro le through web material, online marketing, social media, brochures and publications, presentations, video, and
press materials.
Our successful Communications Manager is able to work independently and ef ciently, while balancing competing
priorities. They bring strong project management skills and are able to balance short and long-term goals. They are also
committed to working as part of a team, effectively supporting collaboration, and remaining adaptable throughout the content development process.

Program Planning & Management (60%):
• Oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of communication plans for the organization as a
whole and for speci c programs and projects; ensure that external communications re ect the priorities identi ed
in the strategic plan and contribute to the organization’s mission;
• Edit and submit as well as regularly author weekly news column to the Peterborough Examiner and
KawarthaNOW.com;
• Write, edit, and distribute media releases, backgrounders, and photos to the media; assist with planning of media
events, such as program launches and announcements;
• Maintain an accurate media distribution list for local, regional and provincial/national media while cultivating
relationships with local media, reporters, and editors;
• Manage production of monthly e-newsletter including gathering material and writing/editing content;
• Act as online community manager for Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LindkedIN, and track social trends, along with
movement in narratives and cultural trends that can help inform online tactics and content plans;
• Update website and edit documents for clarity, grammar, and typographical errors
as requested by coordinators, directors, or executive director;
• Research new trends, best practices, and strategies for all forms of communication to effectively engage target
audiences for various program departments;
• Create effective advertising and marketing briefs, concepts, copy, and graphics for print, digital, and broadcast
advertising;
• Support staff in developing displays for special events such as trade shows, and represent GreenUP at events as
required;
• Oversee content development and graphic design; prepare graphics and photographs for a variety of
communications products including print publications, social media, web, A/V presentations; work closely with
outside vendors for printing, web design, graphic design and other projects as needed.
Financial Sustainability & Management (5%):
• Promote GreenUP programs including social enterprise and fee-for-service opportunities in order maintain a
sustainable operational model;
• Collaborate with the Director of Finance and Operations and Executive Director in budget preparations and
ongoing nancial reviews;
• Research best investment of advertising dollars and work with media sales representatives;
• Support directors and coordinators in budgeting for program-speci c marketing and the development of
promotional or educational materials.
Human Resources (10%):
• Promote GreenUP programs including social enterprise and fee-for-service opportunities in order maintain a
sustainable operational model;
• Provide direct supervision to one part-time communications support-staff, and sub-contractors, including hiring,
performance evaluation, and corrective action while coaching and mentoring seasonal staff;
• Contribute to organizational processes to enhance effective communication, maintain a strong culture of
employee engagement, and support effective respectful working relationships among staff;
• In conjunction with the Executive Director, support the implementation of the human resources policies,
procedures, and practices, including appropriate training for staff and contractors within the department.
Organizational Leadership (15%):
• Act as the internal resource and expert on marketing, communications, and social media, including providing
training and education to internal staff, development of new guidelines and resources, as needed;
• Act as GreenUP Brand Of cer, ensuring brand standards are followed as laid out in brand style guide and policy;
• Lead development of key organizational documents and reports as needed including the GreenUP Annual
Report;
• Serve as chief administrator for back end of WordPress and Shopify websites, Meta Business Suite, Google
(including administration of Google Ad Grants), LinkedIN, Twitter, and other services as needed;
• Provide computer troubleshooting, setting up and management of email accounts, domain name registration,
and web hosting;
• Provide general of ce administration and support in organizing communications supplies and materials;
• Support organization in the process of Truth and Reconciliation.
Partner and Donor Relations & Communications (10%):
• Foster good working relationships and collaborative arrangements with community groups, funders,
municipalities, government agencies, local businesses, and other organizations to help achieve organizational
goals;
• Support fundraising campaigns and donor relations; assist with data management, report production, and
analysis in Sumac database.

QUALIFICATIONS
• Post-secondary degree or diploma and relevant experience in marketing, communications, journalism, or related
elds;
• Minimum 3-years of related experience creating and managing organic and paid multi-channel content
campaigns that exceed expectations across multiple platforms, including conventional media and social media;
• Strong writing, editing, and grammar skills; sound knowledge of Canadian Press style of writing and generating
editorial content;
• Strong online community management skills, social media KPIs, and familiarity with tools like TweetDeck, Meta
Business Suite, Later, Hootsuite, Canva, etc.
• Experience with media relations and public relations;
• Sound knowledge of MS Of ce applications, working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, experience using
WordPress and Shopify;
• Understanding of, and experience applying, best practices in search engine optimization, web traffic metrics, and
facility with Google Analytics and administration of Google Adwords and/or Google Ad Grants.

REQUIREMENTS
• Exceptional communications skills (written verbal, and listening);
• General graphic design and photography skills, including photo editing;
• Access to reliable transportation.
