For many young people, a first job marks a milestone. For Julie, it was the hard-won result of years navigating a job market that often overlooked her needs as a person with multiple exceptionalities.
Determined to work in a creative, inclusive setting, Julie set her sights on Michaels back in 2023. Despite engaging in employment programs and taking on unpaid co-ops, she struggled to find a role that matched her strengths – structured tasks, limited customer interaction, and strong employer support.
“She was offered roles, but none truly fit,” her mother explained. “She needed trust, stability, and a chance to grow.”
Julie tried seasonal and volunteer positions, but none led to long-term employment. Then she entered Agilec’s Employment Services program, which focuses on personalized, outcome-driven support. Through Agilec, she was connected to Michaels’ “Makers Like Me” Disability Inclusion Program and secured her first paid job as a Service Team Member in December 2024. Her duties – stocking, organizing, and prepping merchandise – matched her abilities and experience.
Starting at 5:00 a.m. wasn’t easy, but with Agilec’s support, Julie adapted. “This being my first job, on top of the early mornings, was not easy,” she said. “But I’m proud of what I’ve done.”
Julie has gained confidence and independence. Her story shows the power of inclusive hiring, personalized support, and what’s possible when people are seen and supported as whole individuals.
